World Press Freedom Day — 03 May

World Press Freedom Day 2020

Today is World Press Freedom Day. This Day is celebrated every year on 03 May since 1993 when it was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December.

World Press Freedom Day has four objectives:

  • celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom;
  • assess the state of press freedom throughout the world;
  • defend the media from attacks on their independence;
  • pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

World Press Freedom Day 2020’s theme is “journalism without fear or favor”. It is an opportunity to emphasize the importance of independent journalism, to condemn the threats, pressure and other restrictions journalists face in their work, and to tackle issues related to safety of journalists, impunity for crimes against journalists, independence of journalists and media, gender equality within the media industry.
